Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
