The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
