Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
